RAKETA type (Project 340, 340E and 340ME)
Medium-sized passenger hydrofoil







The RAKETA was in serial production between 1957 and 1976 in the shipbuilding plants "Krasnoye Sormovo" (Nyisniy Novgorod - Russia) and "Morye" (Feodosia - Ukraina). In all 389 units were produced, 26-32 of them for export.
The main engine was one Zvezda M400 type V12 marine diesel, with a capacity of 1.000 HP. The cruising speed is 31-32 kns (app. 60 km/h), the operational range 500 km. The fuel consumption of the engine is 165 kg/hour. The passenger capacity depends on model from 58 to 64 pax.

The MAHART operated 3 "Raketa" hydrofoils between 1962 and 1985: 
SIRÁLY I (1962-1983), SIRÁLY II (1962-1983) and SIRÁLY III (1976-1985).
The name "sirály" means in english mew/gull.


METEOR type (Project 342, 342E and 342U)

The large-sized "Meteor" type was in serial production since 1960 till 1994. The shipbuilding plants: "Krasnoje Sormovo" (N. Novgorod - Sovietunion/Russia), "Gorkij" (Zelenodolsk - Sovietunion/Russia) and Khabarovsk, along the river Amur were the main plants. Still in 2003 2 units were produced in the plant Khabarovsk for a shipping company in China. Maybe these 2 hydrofoils belong to the newer and modified type Meteor-2000.
About 29-31 units were exported, but maybe some other units were sold later to other countrys/operators.
Operators: Sovietunion, later Russia and some other successor states, China, Hungary (3), Slovakia (3), Holland, and some other countrys.

The type had 2 main engines made by Zvezda. In the most case the "Meteor" had two M400 engines, but some were equiped with two M417A. Both engine models had the same capacity of 1.000 HP (max. capacity 1.100 HP).
The top speed of a "Meteor" reaches 35,6 kns (66 km/h), the cruising speed 32 kns (60 km/h). The passenger capacity, depends on the model, was 112-123 pax. In the standard model the capacity was 123 pax (26 pax in the front hall, 46 pax in the middle passenger hall, 46 pax in the rear part of the ship, and 5 pax in a small-sized cabin).

The sea-going modell was the "Kometa", later the "Kometa-B", wich are very similar to the "Meteor", but with larger wings, bigger draught to manage the waves in coustal seas. Kometas were exported in large number, to China, Greece, Turkye. One unit was operated in France in the 80's.

Since 2001 the plant "Gorkij" produces the "Meteor-2000", wich is very similar to the "Meteor", but with an engine capacity of 2 x 1.270 HP and a top speed of 70 km/h, and air-conditioned passenger halls.

The MAHART, later the MAHART PassNave operated 3 units of the "Meteor" type since 1971: SÓLYOM I (1971-1997), SÓLYOM II (since 1990) and the SÓLYOM III /ex-Wilhelm Alexander from Holland/ (since 2003)
The name "Sólyom" means hawk/falcon in english.




METEOR-2000 type
Large-sized passenger hydrofoil

Since 2001 the shipbuilding plant "Gorkij" (Zelenodolsk - Russia) is pruducing this type. The METEOR-2000 has an overall lenght of 34,6 m, an overall beam of 9,5 m, a draught of 2,35 m, and 1,2 m at cruising speed. It has a displacement of 43,82 tons, a full displacement of 57,24 tons. The main engines are two german made DEUTZ TBD616V16 marine diesels, with a power output of 1.272 HP each at 2.165 rpm. The auxiliry engine has a capacity of 44 kW.
The passenger capacity is between 104 and 116 pax, depending on the model. The passenger halls are air conditioned. The top speed goes up to 75 km/h, the range reaches 600 km.


KOMETA type (Project 342ME)

The type was in serial production since 1961 till 1983 in the plants of N. Novgorod, Feodosia (1965-1980), Poti (Armenia) and Volskij along the river Volga. The ukrainian plant "Morye" in Feodosia produced 86 units in all, 34 of them for export. All in all 106 units were exported.
The main engines of the KOMETA are two Zvezda made M400 or M401A, 12 cylinder diesel, 1.000 HP each.The fuel consumption is 286 kg/hour of each engine. Cruising speed 33 kns (61 km/h). Operational range 445 km. Passenger capacity 118-120 pax. 
The KOMETA type was exported in wide scale and in the largest number of the soviet made hydrofoil types. 
Operators was/are: Sovietunion, later Russia, Ukraina and other exsoviet countries, China, Cuba, Jugoslavia, Greece, Turkye, a shipping company in France and some other countries. 
Some units of the type are still operating in 2007. 







Large-sized river-sea going passenger hydrofoil

The KOMETA-B is the serial type of today. The main engines are two Zvezda made M470 marine diesel, V12, with a power of 1.345 HP. The type is also producable with optional engines of Detroit type, with 1.115 HP each or MTU 16V 396 TE 74 type, with 2.000 HP each.
Top speed at 36 kns (66 km/h), cruising speed reaches 34 knts (63 km/h). Displacement of the KOMETA-B is 52,8 tons, full displacement goes up to 67,8. The overall lenght is 37,54 m, overall beam 8,4 m, draught 4,6 m, draught at cruising speed 1,4 m. Operational range reaches 445 km. The passenger capacity of the type is 110 pax and 5 crew members.

POLESYE type (Project 17091) 
Small-sized passenger hydrofoil

The "Polesye" type (Project 17091) was in serial production since 1970 till the 90's in the shipbuilding plant Gomel, in Belorussia. More then 100 vessels have been produced. The cruising speed of the "Polesye" is 36 kns (66 km/h) and the passenger capacity 53 pax. Main engine is a Zvezda made M401 12 cylinder turbo charged marine diesel, with a capacity of 1.000 HP. Overall lenght is 21,3 m, draught 1,03 m, draught at cruising speed reaches only 0,4 m. Displacement of the POLESYE type is 14,19 tons, full displacement reaches 20,4 tons.

The MAHART, later the MAHART PassNave operated 4 units since 1992: BÍBIC I (1992-), BÍBIC II (1992-), BÍBIC III (1993-), BÍBIC IV (1993-). The passenger capacity of the Bíbic units were 44 pax till 2006, after this year the capacity rises up to 54 pax (no luggage storage on board). The BÍbic III was reconstructed and overall renewaled in 2006, renamed to Bíbic III Business Class. The unit has a passenger capacity of 26 pax, GPS navigation system and is used primary for inland charter.
The name "Bíbic" means peewit/lapwing in english.

BELARUS type (Project 1709R)
Small-sized passenger hydrofoil

The BELRUS type was produced between 1966 and 1970 in small number in Gomel, Belorussia. The POLESYE replaced after 1970 the BELARUS type. 
The BELARUS had an overall lenght of 18,5 meter, an overall beam of 3,2 meter, the draught was 0,91 meter and 0,3 meter at cruising speed. The cruising speed reached 65 km/h, the operational range was 320 km. The passenger capacity was 40 pax.




VOSHOD type (Project 352) and VOSHOD-2 type (Project 03521)

The medium-sized "Voshod" type was in serial production since 1973/76 till 1992 in the Sovietunion (Ukraina) in the ukrainian shipbuilding plant Morye. All in all app. 156 units were built for domestic market and for export. The "Voshod" has two Zvezda made M401A2 main engines with a capacity of 1.000 HP each at 1550 rpm. Top speed reaches 33,5 kns (62 km/h).
Overall lenght of the model is 27,6 m, draught 2,0 m and 1,1 m at cruising mode. The displacement of the "Voshod" hydrofoil is 23,88 tons and the full displacement reaches 28 tons. The fuel tank has a capacity of 1.100 kg diesel oil, the fresh water tank takes 130 liters. The operational range of the model reaches 460-500 kilometers. The passenger capacity is 71-77 pax.
Operators: Russia, Ukraina, Canada (7 units), Vietnam (4 units), Hungary (3 units), Malaysia, Slovakia (1), Holland and some other countries.

The MAHART, later the MAHART PassNave operated 4 units of the type "Voszhod-2" since 1977: VÖCSÖK I (1977-2003), VÖCSÖK II since 1986, VÖCSÖK III since 1987, VÖCSÖK IV since 1987
In 2007 all units were overall renewaled and reconstructed by the MAHART PassNave. The passenger capacity was 62-65 pax till 2007, now the units can carry 68-71 passengers





VOSHOD-2M type (Project 03521-M)

Today a modified version, the "Voshod-2M" (Russia) and the "Eurofoil" (Ukraina) types are in serial production. The "Voshod-2M" has two M419A main engines with 1.100 HP capacity each, the "Eurofoil" two MTU engines with app. 1070 HP each.
The messurements and characteristics of the newer version is the same as of the "Voshod".





LASTOCHKA type (Project 03525)
High speed river-sea going hydrofoil

The type was produced in a very small nuber in the 80's (only 2 units?!). One unit is in Hungary - 2nd photo (2006).
As main engines it has two Zvezda M470 or DRA-470MRA 12 cylinder diesels with an output of 1.350 HP each engine. Speed is 40 kns (70 km/h), topspeed reaches 80-85 km/h. The overall lenght of the hydro is 31 m, full displacement 37 tons. Passenger capacity is 77 pax and 4 crew members.




LASTOCHKA-M type (Project 03525-M)
High speed river-sea going hydrofoil

Serial model of today. The Alekseyev Central Hydrofoil Design Bureau at the river Volga produces the model for domestic and export. In 2004 2 units were produced for China.
The main engines are two 12 cylinder V diesel of Zvezda M470 type (1350 HP each), the auxiliry engine a german made "Panda" with 24 kW (380V 50 Hz). Overall lenght 29,97 m, overall beam 7,13 m, draught 2,2 m (normal), 1,15 m (at cruising speed), full diplacement of the type is 36,76 t.
Cruising speed reaches 40 kns (74 km/h) and topspeed goes up to 45 kns (83 km/h). Operational range: 550 km. Passenger capacity of the type depends on model between 65-79 pax (+ 4 crew).



KATRAN type (Project 10390)

The serial production of the type started in 1984. The KATRAN has an overall lenght of 34,5 m, a 3,5 m draught, and a 1,9 m draught at cruising speed. The empty displacement is 56,93 t, tthe full 74 t. Main engines are two Zvezda M470, 12 cylinder marine diesel, with 1.300 HP each (the maximum output of the engine is 1.714 HP for a short time). Speed goes up to 35 kns (65 km/h), operational range only 370 km.
Capacity 141-148 passengers and 4 crew members.




KOLKHIDA type (Project 10391)

The KOLKHIDA is a newer version of the KATRAN with the same engines, characteristics and parameters. Only the operational range groves up to 550 km.

KOLKHIDA-M type (Project 10391-M)

Its a modified and newer version of the KOLKHIDA. The empty displacement is 56,93 t, the full displacement 68 tons. The main engines are two MTU 12V396 TE 74 type, 12 cylinder, marine diesel, with a capacity of 1.714 HP at 1.900 rpm each. Speed goes up to 35 kns (65 km/h) and the range same to the previous versions. Passenger capacity is 133 and 5 crew members.





CYCLONE type (Project 12352)
Large sea going hydrofoil

The CYCLONE was built in 1986, in the ukrainian plant "Morye" in Feodosia. Only this one unit was built!
The main engine is a 8.000 HP gasturbine (M37 type). Overall lenght of the unit is 44,2 m, overall beam 12,6 m. The CYCLONE has a draught of 4,36 m, a draught of 2,4 m at cruising speed. Empty displacement: 106 tons, full displacement: 143 tons. The cruising speed has a top of 42 knts (78 km/h) and the operational range: 550 km. Passenger capacity: 250 pax, crew 8.

Since 1987 the shipping company "Black Sea" operated the CYCLONE between Yalta and Odessa in the hole year. Previous the company had KOMETA typ hydrofoils on the rout, but not in the hole year, because the Kometas could not manege the rouw sea in winter.
The CYCLONE does the distance of 217 km between the two ports in 4 hours and 25 minutes. In the years between 1991 and 1993 the CYCLONE operated in the bay of Finland, between Tallinn and Helsinki. Later, in 1998 the ship was soled to a greak shipping company.





Large sea going hydrofoil

The main difference to the CYCLONE was the main engine. Instead of one 8.000 HP gasturbine engine, the M-model has two 4.000 HP gasturbine engines. The displacement of the M-model groves up to 115 tons, and the full displacement to 150 tons. Speed and range is the same. Only a half ended unit existed in the 90's.

OLIMPIYA type (Project 14600)
Large sea going hydrofoil

Some units were built in the ukrainian plant "Morye" in Feodosia, 2 units for export. The OLIMPIYA has two MTU type (each 2.720 HP) or two Zvezda DRA-532A typ (each 2.820 HP) main engines. Overall lenght 43,1 m, draught 4,6 méter, draught at cruising speed 2,0 m. Displacement 103 tons, full displacement 135 tons (serial model) and 142 tonns (ferry model). Cruising speed 37 knts (68 km/h). Range 550 km. Fuel consumption reaches 698 kg/hour.
Passenger capacity of the serial model is 250 pax. The ferry model can carry 150 passengers and 5 cars or 5 tons cargo. Both models has 6 crew members.




BUREVESTNIK type (Project 1708)
Experimental gasturbine hydrofoil

The type was produced since 1964 in small number. The BUREVESTNIK had two Ivchenko gasturbines, with a power of 2.700 HP each. Cruising speed was 50 kns (93 km/h), topspeed at 54 kns (100 km/h) (Some sources give a topspeed of app. 150 km/h!). Passanger capacity of the hydrofoil is 150 pax. Overall lenght 43,2 meters, overall beam 7,4 meters, draught 2,0 meters, draught on wings 0,6 m.




CHAYKA type (Project 1705)
Experimental high speed hydrofoil

The CHAYKA was built since 1962 in a very small number. The operational range of the type was 400 km, the topspeed reached 86 km/h. Some sources say this was only the cruising speed and the topspeed was higher. The overall lenght of the CHAYKA was 26,3 m, the overall beam 3,8 m, the type had a draught of 1,1 m and a draught of 0,3 m at cruising speed. The passenger capacity of the type was 30 pax. The main engine type is unknown, maybe an M50, like in the earlier RAKETA models, the engine had a capacity of 900 HP.




SPUTNIK type (Project 329)
Large-sized experimental hydrofoil

Only one unit was built in 1961. Overall lenght of the hydrofoil was 47,3 m, overall beam 11,7 m, the unit had a draught of 0,9 m at cruising speed and 2,7 m normal draught. The full displacement was 110 t. The SPUTNIK had 4 main engines of the Zvezda-type M50V first generation marine diesel, with an output of 850 HP each engine. The cruising speed was 35 kns (65 km/h), topspeed reached 41 kns (76 km/h). The operational range was 600-650 km. Capacity 256 passengers.




VIKHR type (Project 330)

The VIKHR was produced in small number since 1962. It is a modified version of the SPUTNIK. As main engines the VIKHR had four MTU 16V396TV94 type marine diesels or four Zvezda M50V type engines. Both types had a power of 850 HP each. Overall lenght of the VIKHR was 47,5 m, overall beam 11,4. The draught was 1,5 m at cruising speed and 4,1 m when the ship stoped. Full displacement 120 t, speed 40 kns (74 km/h). Capacity 260 passengers.
